A world-renowned respiratory neurobiology researcher and scholar, Mitchell was among the first to recognize the importance of neuroplasticity in respiratory motor control. He is the recipient of a number of awards including a National Institutes of Health MERIT Award and selection as a distinguished lecturer by the American Physiological Society and the Society for Neuroscience.
