Biography

Chengguo Xing's independent research has been focusing on isolating, designing and synthesizing biologically active small molecules as drug leads for translation and employing such candidates as probes to understand mechanism of drug action and related biology, with the long-term goal of developing solutions towards effectively managing human diseases. Another mission of our research is to train graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, undergraduate students, and other professionals the integration of different disciplines at the interface of chemistry and biology, including pharmacognosy, medicinal chemistry, chemical biology, molecular and cellular biology, and clinical bioanalytical chemistry.

Get to the Root of It

If there’s one piece of advice Chengguo “Chris” Xing, Ph.D., would give you, it’s “to stress less.” Xing, the Frank A. Duckworth Eminent Scholar Chair and a professor of medicinal chemistry in the University of Florida College of Pharmacy, sees stress as the culprit in various health conditions: insomnia, anxiety, tobacco cravings — even cancer. He’s been evaluating a natural product for its potential to help manage all of these. It’s called piper methysticum, which is better known as kava.

In vivo structure-activity relationship of dihydromethysticin in reducing NNK-induced lung DNA damage against lung carcinogenesis

ChemMedChem

Chengguo Xing, et al.

2022-01-21

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths and chemoprevention should be developed. We recently identified dihydromethysticin (DHM) as a promising candidate to prevent NNK-induced lung tumorigenesis. To probe its mechanisms and facilitate its future translation, we investigated the structure-activity relationship of DHM on NNK-induced DNA damage in A/J mice.

Characterization of different forms of kava (Piper methysticum) products by UPLC-MS/MS

Planta Medica

Jessica Mamallapalli, et al.

2021-11-28

There are several forms of kava (Piper methysticum) products available for human consumption, and many factors are known to influence their chemical compositions and therefore their pharmacological properties. Because of the increased popularity of kava intake, a rigorous characterization of their content diversity is prerequisite, particularly due to its known potential to cause hepatotoxicity.
