Crystal Marull is the coordinator of the Online Spanish Program. She capitalizes on digital tools and virtual environments to offer a variety of media-rich lesson plans. Her innovative courses incorporate telecollaborative virtual exchanges between students and native speakers located across Latin America. Her areas of research include bilingualism and second language acquisition, specializing in second language processing of morphology and syntax, heritage language acquisition, cognitive individual differences and second language pedagogy.

Going after what you really want in life can be an incredibly daunting prospect, especially when the financial rewards are not immediate and you have little mouths to feed. That’s why I love Crystal’s story. Executive Women of New Jersey did, too, and will be honoring her among several other women at a scholarship dinner tonight. Consider this post my personal, virtual high-five for showing us all that it can be done.

The rising population of heritage speakers (HS) in university courses in the US has increased the need for instructors who understand the linguistic, social, and cultural profiles of their students. Recent research has discussed the need for specialized courses and their differentiation from second-language (L2) classes, as well as the intersection between HS and language attitudes.
Authentic Language Learning through Telecollaboration in Online Courses

We describe the integration of telecollaborative language coaching sessions into an online Spanish program as the unifying thread for asynchronous learning and reflection activities. In survey responses, students reported improved language skills and cultural knowledge, and the ability to apply linguistic skills to “real-life” situations due to their virtual interactions with native speakers. The importance of authentic learning experiences in online language courses and online courses in other disciplines is discussed.
