Biography

Dr. Glenn Morris has worked in public health and pathogen-related fields for more than 30 years, and he has had a continuing fascination with emerging pathogens. His key initiatives include work with Covid-19 epidemiology, zika, and cholera. His studies range from basic work on evolutionary genetics, epidemiology, and pathogen surveillance to the use of real-world data and bioinformatics to develop predictive mathematical models for disease transmission within populations. Morris is a professor of medicine, and he serves as the director of the Emerging Pathogens Institute. He is board-certified in both internal medicine and infectious diseases.

Without Rapid Tests, COVID Will Be Hard To Control In Schools, Says UF Expert

WUSF Public Media - WUSF 89.7  online

2020-08-23

Schools are reopening across Florida, with a range of safety measures in place to guard against coronavirus. But one key component is missing: the ability to quickly get test results for students and staff. WUSF's Kerry Sheridan spoke with Dr. Glenn Morris, director of the Emerging Pathogens Institute at the University of Florida, about why that's a critical concern.

The Big Picture: Epi's Director Speaks About The Covid-19 Pandemic

University of Florida  online

2020-04-10

The Emerging Pathogens Institute was formed in 2006 to bring researchers across disciplines together with the goal of better understanding and anticipating new disease-causing microorganisms that affect people, plants and animals. Much of its research is focused globally, with an eye toward what might affect the State of Florida. But for the first time, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought a widespread outbreak right up to the institute's doors.

Orthobunyaviruses in the Caribbean: Melao and Oropouche virus infections in school children in Haiti in 2014

PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases

Maha A. Elbadry, et al.

2021-06-16

We report the identification of two orthobunyaviruses, Melao virus (MELV) and Oropouche virus (OROV), in plasma specimens from Haitian children with acute febrile illness who presented during outbreaks caused by alpha- and flaviviruses in 2014. Heretofore not described as a human pathogen, MELV was isolated in cell culture from the plasma of five case patients.

Exploring convolutional neural networks and spatial video for on-the-ground mapping in informal settlements

International Journal of Health Geographics

Jayakrishnan Ajayakumar, et al.

2021-01-25

The health burden in developing world informal settlements often coincides with a lack of spatial data that could be used to guide intervention strategies. Spatial video (SV) has proven to be a useful tool to collect environmental and social data at a granular scale, though the effort required to turn these spatially encoded video frames into maps limits sustainability and scalability.

An Outbreak of COVID-19 Among H-2A Temporary Agricultural Workers

American Journal of Public Health (AJPH)

Michael Lauzardo, et al.

2020-11-21

During the COVID-19 pandemic, attention has focused on outbreaks in meatpacking and other food production facilities. However, substantive problems have also arisen among agricultural worker populations, including temporary workers brought to the United States under H-2A visas. H-2A workers face the same environmental and occupational health risks as all farmworkers but may be even more vulnerable because they have less control over their living and working environments.
