Holly Lane is the director of the University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI) and the Irving and Rose Fien professor of education. She serves on the special education program faculty in the School of Special Education, School Psychology and Early Childhood Studies. She is the principal investigator for the James Patterson Literacy Challenge, an initiative aimed at improving literacy outcomes for children in the state of Florida, and she is the lead developer of the UFLI Foundations phonics curriculum. With her team at UFLI, Holly also created the Virtual Teaching Resource Hub to support teachers as they moved to remote reading instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic. More than a half million users from around the globe have used the site’s resources. Holly’s research focuses on literacy intervention and prevention of reading difficulties through effective early literacy instruction and teacher education. She has conducted studies of reading instruction, teacher development, and teacher knowledge of literacy. Holly has also been the principal investigator of four doctoral training projects focused on preparing scholars in literacy intervention research. In 2021, she received the Leaders Inspiring Readers Award from the International Literacy Association in recognition of her work to address the needs of struggling readers.

The timing of the science of reading movement and the resulting shifts in practice happened to coincide with the COVID-19 pandemic, as schools were shutting down and moving to remote learning. Ultimately, this leap into remote teaching led many teachers to become more comfortable using technology in their instruction and in their own learning.
