Vitamin D deficiency tied to increased COVID-19 risk, unique UF data study finds
UF Health online
2021-01-20
Patients with a vitamin D deficiency were four times more likely to be COVID-19 positive than those with a sufficient amount of the crucial vitamin, a University of Florida research team has found. And African American patients with insufficient vitamin D levels were three times more likely to be infected by the coronavirus. Insufficient vitamin D has been linked with respiratory infections, and research suggests vitamin D treatment may help lessen symptoms of COVID-19.
Can Covid Lead to Impotence?
The New York Times print

For a respiratory disease, Covid-19 causes some peculiar symptoms. It can diminish the senses of smell and taste, leave patients with discolored “Covid toes,” or even cause a swollen, bumpy “Covid tongue.” Now scientists are examining a possible link to an altogether unexpected consequence of Covid: erectile dysfunction. A connection has been reported in hundreds of papers by scientists in Europe and North America, as well as in Egypt, Turkey, Iran and Thailand.

To evaluate whether the prevalence of glossodynia increased among patients affected by COVID-19 compared to other hospital populations. The i2b2 patient registry platform at the University of Florida Health Center was used to generate a count of patients using the international classification of diseases (ICD)-10 diagnosis codes from October 2015 to June 2021. Logistic regression of the aggregates was used for analysis.

Coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) risk factors are age, race, gender, and pre-existing conditions including cardiovascular, respiratory, and endocrine diseases. The severe acute respiratory corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) binds to the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor for cellular entry and infects respiratory tract cells. Multiple organs, including kidneys, lungs, brain, and pharynxes, are affected and account for increased morbidity.
