Biography

Dr. Patrick Tighe’s research examines how machine and deep learning algorithms, decision and process modeling, and social network analyses can improve acute postoperative pain and patient safety. He is an associate professor of anesthesiology, Donn M. Dennis MD Professorship in Anesthetic Innovation, co-director of the Perioperative Cognitive Anesthesia Network and associate professor of orthopaedics and information systems and operations management.

Gabapentinoids are increasingly prescribed to manage chronic noncancer pain (CNCP) in older adults. When used concurrently with opioids, gabapentinoids may potentiate central nervous system (CNS) depression and increase the risks for fall. We aimed to investigate whether concurrent use of gabapentinoids with opioids compared with use of opioids alone is associated with an increased risk of fall-related injury among older adults with CNCP.

Postoperative level-of-care assignments and frequency of vital sign and laboratory measurements (ie, resource intensity) should align with patient acuity. Effective, data-driven decision-support platforms could improve value of care for millions of patients annually, but their development is hindered by the lack of salient definitions and paradigms.
