Biography

Welson Tremura holds a Ph.D. in musicology-ethnomusicology and is currently a professor in the School of Music and the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Florida. He is also the director of the Florida-Brazil International Linkage Institute. In addition, he possesses a law degree and a technical degree in civil engineering from Brazil. He developed businesses between Brazil, the USA, and France for several years. Additional research areas include the use of digital technology in performance, global technology, and the integration of world music as a core discipline and collaborative method for composition and performance. At the University of Florida, he has taught courses in ethnomusicology, applied fieldwork, music and identity, Latin American music, and world music.

He teaches courses in ethnomusicology, Latin America, and Brazilian studies while coordinating artist residencies through the College of the Arts. Additionally, he directs the Brazilian Music Institute, teaches Brazilian guitar and vocal repertoires, and serves as the director of the instrumental ensemble Jacaré Choro, which is dedicated to performing traditional Brazilian instrumental music, as well as the vocal ensemble Jacaré Brazil at the University of Florida.

Tremura’s outstanding performances include concert halls across the USA, such as Carnegie Hall in New York City and the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center in Notre Dame, Indiana. He maintains an active schedule of performances and academics. He has performed and given lectures in Brazil, China, Mexico, Guatemala, the United States, India, Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.
