Engineering

David Prevatt, a wind engineer and professor of civil and coastal engineering has spent a career studying how houses and residential communities perform during hurricanes and tornadoes. His work examines building performance, recovery and rebuilding and how engineering knowledge is turned into policies to improve long-term outcomes in our residential infrastructure and building standards.

Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences

Christa Court uses economic modeling to estimate the financial impact of disasters on Florida’s agriculture, forestry and fisheries sectors. She is the director of the UF Economic Impact Analysis Program.

Center for Coastal Solutions

Nina Stark, Ph.D., co-leader of a rapid-response team, led a joint effort by NER and GEER to study the impacts of Hurricanes Helene and Milton on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the team mobilized quickly to collect data before, during and after the storms, focusing on storm surge, wave action and erosion in areas like Cedar Key and Horseshoe Beach.

Design, Construction & Planning

In 2019, Jeffrey Carney and UF’s Florida Resilient Cities program began working closely with Port St. Joe in the Florida panhandle following massive destruction from Hurricane Michael. The project from UF’s Florida Institute for Built Environment Resilience focuses on the city’s storm recovery and its long-term resilience to climate change.
